For mechanical machining on rotating surfaces such as outer circles and holes, the machining allowance is considered from the diameter, hence it is called symmetrical allowance (i.e. bilateral allowance), which means that the actual thickness of the metal layer cut is half of the machining allowance on the diameter. The machining allowance of a flat surface is the unilateral allowance, which is equal to the actual thickness of the metal layer cut. The purpose of leaving machining allowance on the workpiece is to remove machining errors and surface defects left by the previous process. The required machinery for machining includes digital milling machines, digital forming grinders, digital lathes, electric discharge machines, universal grinders, machining centers, laser welding, commonly used mechanical wires, fast wire, slow wire, and cylindrical grinders.
